Payload
The payload refers to the maximum load that a shelving unit - such as pallet racking or heavy-duty shelving - can safely carry. It is usually specified in kilograms (kg) and refers to the weight that can be distributed on a shelf or within a storage level.
Payload in pallet racking:
The payload for pallet racking defines the maximum load capacity per storage level or per rack location. This load limit takes into account the load from standardized pallets such as Euro or industrial pallets. The load capacity of a pallet rack depends on several factors:
- the construction and material thickness of the racking,
- the type of pallets (e.g. wood, plastic) and
- the even distribution of the load on the level.
Payload in heavy-duty racking:
The payload for heavy-duty shelving is also specified per shelf or level. Heavy-duty shelving is designed for storing particularly heavy goods and offers a high load capacity. The load capacity of heavy-duty shelving usually refers to the shelves and is also based on the uniform load.
What needs to be considered for the payload:
- Observe load limits: Exceeding the payload can lead to damage to the shelving and even collapse.
- Rack inspection: To ensure safety, rack inspections should be carried out regularly in accordance with legal requirements.
- Load distribution: The specified payload always assumes that the load is evenly distributed.
- Labeling: Payloads must be clearly visible on the racking, for example by means of a load plate.
By complying with the payload specifications, you ensure safety in your warehouse and the durability of your shelving systems.
